Alcohol - in Moderation
Stressed out? Have a drink. It's almost an automatic reaction with an alarming number of us these days- Alcohol may seem like the instant solution to life's troubles. Trouble is, it relaxes you in the short term, but makes you more anxious and disrupts your sleep in the long term.
In the short term, alcohol works by giving you a double whammy. It immediately raises your blood sugar leve1' boosting your energy (although your blood sugar tends to corrie crashing down within an hour). It also promotes the release of the brain's own natural tranquilliser, GABA. This is a neurotransmitter that turns off adrenalin and chills you out.
There's a hitch: alcohol promotes GABA for about an hour, then suppresses it. Hence the need for another drink. If you want to be naturally relaxed, make alcohol a rare treat, not a daily habit.
How Much is Too Much?
As soon as you start getting drunk, you've exceeded your body's capacity to detoxify alcohol. So, really, one glass of wine or a pint of beer is enough. We'd recommend this no more than three times a week. Beyond that, you also tend to develop the habit of using alcohol to unwind.
How to Quit
One way to greatly reduce the craving for alcohol is by having an excellent diet. Vitamins and minerals are important because they help to regulate your blood sugar level, and hence your appetite. For maximum effect it's best to supplement as well as eating foods rich in these nutrients, such as fresh fruit and vegetables; we recommend a high-strength multivitamin plus 2000mg of vitamin Ñ and 200mcg of chromium per day. Also, don't use alcohol as food. If you are hungry, eat first.
